A brief explanation of methodology

Bar Research Project
Methodology
Combining collection of quantitative data with qualitative techniques: immersion of researchers in subject matter, hypothesis not clearly defined initially, reliance upon subjectivity of researchers.
Initial research area: investigate the relationships between several numerical variables mapping experience of bars in East London.
  • Collect numerical data for several variables per bar.
  • Bars selected by distance from home of one researcher (NM)
  • Bars rated for number of variables (list subject to change)
  • Presence of beautiful people (percentage)
  • Art factor (scale to be decided)
  • Number of games (board games etc) available (scale to be decided)
  • Food snacks (bar snacks, not ‘gastro’ meals) (scale to be decided)
  • Extent to which other people initiate conversation (scale to be decided)
  • Psycho-geography of local area (scale to be decided)
  • Price of crisps (scale to be decided)
  • Number of seats (per sq. metre?)
  • Saturation of People per square metre
  • Saturation with ‘habitual drinkers’ (scale to be decided)
  • Average age (numeric range)
  • Extent of media coverage (scale to be decided)
  • Extent of ‘acting out’ (scale to be decided)
  • ‘Star Bar’ potential (scale to be decided)
